ladders

One thing which used to be common (I don't know how common it is today) is that people would leave a ladder outside their home, lock up the ground floor, and leave the 2nd story open. Of course, an intruder need only find the ladder and climb it, bypassing all the locks etc.  So if you have a ladder put it where a stranger cannot get it.
